My friend. Look at the overall colonial system, don't hate specifically on the french: In Gabon you also have SINOPEC, Shell and Exxon so if you thought this was all about the french now you know. And the Belinga iron ore mine is about to be exploited by the chinese. Is it the french's fault if the vast majority of the gabonese still live in poverty? Maybe this country has been under the dictatorship of a family gang for fourty years? You hate on the french total workers driving SUVs but is it more acceptable to your eyes to see black new-riches or chinese engineers driving those? It still comes down to inequality, and this has no color. And... has any colonial power ever come to Africa to endorse like you say "the responsibility of ensuring the welfare" of the people?! If you come to Gabon now you will have a hard time finding french products. China has taken over, so maybe you should reconsider your hate of the french and transform it into a hate of the foreign imperialism in general. Bongo Doit Partir

It would be even nicer if Bongo and his family didn't buy apartments in Paris with all the oil money!

Stay out of the sun, people!!! The French people who live in Gabon all have skin that's beyond repair; it's very sad.

The French government runs Gabon. "Independence" was a good deal because all they had to do was pay off some "leaders" to allow the French to continue to rape the country of its natural resources (the thievery franchise was of course awarded to TOTAL S.A.). Another condition was that all goods be imported from France! But the real brilliance of the deal was the fact that it absolved France of the horrible responsibilty of ensuring the welfare of the people (so the majority of Gabonese without family connections continue to live in poverty). For France, it's been win-win-win! But watch out, the Americans across the street want to get Exxon-Mobil in on the action! Start your bidding!!!

The crew filming that crap reality series SURVIVOR is staying here as of May 2008! I tried talking to them at a cocktail party one evening and they were all like, we can't confirm that we're with Survivor. As if they're CIA spies or something. They seemed to be mostly overweight Aussies in khaki shorts.
